HARLEYSVILLE, Pa., Dec. 12, 2016 – Arbour Square Independent Living and The Birches at Arbour Square Personal Care and Memory Care in Harleysville, Pa. are proud to announce that they have both been selected as 2017 Best of Senior Living Award Winners on SeniorAdvisor.com, the largest ratings and reviews site for senior care and services in North America.

SeniorAdvisor.com’s Best of 2017 Award winners represent the best of the best of in-home care, assisted living, and other senior living providers, based on the online reviews written by seniors and their families. This exclusive designation honors the top one percent of senior care providers across the country.

“Arbour Square and The Birches are proud of this achievement and we are so grateful to have families that trust us in caring for their loved ones,” said Mimi Kehan, campus executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to provide care for senior loved ones and treat them just like our own family by creating a home for them where they can love life.”

The annual SeniorAdvisor.com Best of Awards tabulates over 130,000 family created reviews to find the best quality care providers for this honor. Of the nearly 200,000 communities currently listed on SeniorAdvisor.com, just over 1,600 were recognized with this prestigious award.

The Arbour Square campus offers a continuum of care for seniors in the Harleysville area. Both Arbour Square and The Birches at Arbour Square are winners, and regularly receive highly positive reviews from their families like this one: “Arbour Square facility and employees have answered and exceeded our prayers. Every single person we/they encounter go above and beyond to make our parents comfortable and truly strive to ensure mom and dad thrive and enjoy life in their golden years. There are activities, therapies, good food, beautiful facilities, wonderful people, so mom and dad can remain independent, yet we know they are cared for in a kind, caring, respectful way,” said Mary S.

“Families are increasingly looking to online reviews to find out who truly delivers great care for our seniors, not just who claims to deliver great care,” said Eric Seifert, President of SeniorAdvisor.com. “Our SeniorAdvisor.com Awards program is all about celebrating the exceptional people who do just that. We're honored to spread the word about these organizations whom families can entrust with the care of their senior loved ones.”

To qualify for inclusion in the Best of 2017 Awards, providers must have maintained an average overall rating of at least 4.5 stars while receiving three or more new reviews in 2016. Additional details and a complete list of award winners can be found on SeniorAdvisor.com.

HARLEYSVILLE, Pa., Aug. 13, 2015 – A few years ago, a video surfaced on the Internet, depicting an elderly man in a nursing home, named Henry Dreher. He sat in a wheelchair with his head hanging down. Then, a pair of headphones is placed over his ears, and he starts to hear the music of Cab Calloway through an iPod. Immediately his eyes opened, his face brightened, and he started to sing along with the music. This video clip went viral and provided awareness and enthusiasm for a program designed to help reawaken memories and emotions in seniors who have dementia, through the Music & Memory℠ organization.

Music & Memory℠ is a nonprofit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of seniors through digital music technology, and has proven to improve quality of life, increase socialization, reduce aggressive behavior, and create a supportive social environment. Thanks to the organization, senior communities around the country have been able to provide a Music & Memory program to seniors who have difficulty communicating, due to their progressing dementia diagnosis. One senior living community taking advantage of this program is The Birches at Arbour Square in Harleysville, Pa.

The Birches at Arbour Square is thrilled to provide this personalized music program for residents living in the Daybreak Memory Care community, to help improve quality of life. Asta Fusco, activities director at The Birches at Arbour Square, discovered Music & Memory℠ and got her certification, so she could include this innovative music program as part of the weekly activities schedule. Currently, all activity assistants at The Birches are certified in the program, which makes The Birches the only senior community that is a certified provider of the Music & Memory℠ program in the surrounding area.

As a Music & Memory℠ Certified Care Facility, caregivers learn best practices for how to set up and manage a system for providing a personalized playlist for any resident or client. A series of three 90-minute webinars, taught by founding Executive Director Dan Cohen, MSW, enables caregivers to create a facility-ready iTunes library, efficiently manage many resident playlists, handle equipment and security concerns, integrate personalized digital music into daily care plans, and evaluate the program’s effectiveness.

At The Birches, when the residents gather for the program, three days per week for one hour, they are each provided with an mp3 player that has music downloaded onto it. Residents can create their own playlist genre and/or provide the staff with a list of songs they would like to have on the mp3 player. While listening to the music, staff members will ask them questions about the music, if they are enjoying it, if they want to hear something different, or how they are feeling while listening to the music. Residents can choose music from a variety of genres, including jazz, blues, 50s-80s, opera and many more, that take them back to a time in their life that makes them happy.

“Reactions have been overwhelming since we started the program. Even from our residents who no longer communicate or join in any activities, I have seen them come alive and start dancing, singing and smiling,” said Fusco. “It is like seeing that resident come back to life and become the person they used to be years ago.”

The entire Daybreak Memory Care staff at The Birches is working on getting their certification for the program, and once they are all certified, residents will be able to listen to their music at any time, day or night.

“My mother has been at The Birches for three years, with one and a half of them spent in Daybreak. I visit her every other day and I see what goes on,” said Ann Bradley, daughter of a resident. “One day, Asta Fusco brought in headphones with music for each of the residents. I could not believe what I saw! My mother, who is in a wheelchair, started singing and clapping her hands. Another resident started dancing and singing, and others soon joined her. What a wonderful day that was to see the residents having so much fun laughing, singing and dancing. Music certainly makes a difference.”

The Birches is accepting donations of gently used mp3 players or iPods of any variety, in order to keep the program going and involve as many residents as possible. Donations can be dropped off at The Birches, located at 691 Main Street, Harleysville, Pa.

The Birches at Arbour Square receives 2015 Best of Senior Living Award from SeniorAdvisor.com

HARLEYSVILLE, Pa., Dec. 23, 2014 – The Birches at Arbour Square Personal Care and Memory Care is pleased to announce the community was presented with a 2015 Best of Senior Living Award for receiving consistently high ratings from residents and their families in the past year. Only a select few communities in Pennsylvania were honored, and The Birches is proud to be one of them.

Now in its second year, the SeniorAdvisor.com Best of 2015 Awards celebrate the best of the best in senior living and home care across the United States. The award is only given to communities and agencies that have received outstanding online feedback from their families through the SeniorAdvisor.com site. Of the nearly 100,000 providers currently listed on SeniorAdvisor.com, only 879 were recognized with this award.

“The Birches at Arbour Square is proud of this achievement and we are so grateful to have families that trust us in caring for their loved ones,” said Julie Kline, campus marketing director. “We thank each and every person who gave us a positive review, as well as those that tell their friends and families about our wonderful services. We are thrilled to be able to provide care for senior loved ones in an environment that is kind and loving.”

Winners of the award are located all over the country and represent the top tier of independent living, assisted living, and Alzheimer’s care communities on the SeniorAdvisor.com website. This exclusive designation places the winners in the top one percent of senior care providers nationwide, according to those who matter most – their families.

“I really do not have any areas of improvement to suggest here. We liked this place because it was close to home, and the fact that they offer the right level of care for my loved one’s particular needs,” said a reviewer on SeniorAdvisor.com, who has a loved one living in the community. “It’s great that they have a speech therapist, as well as occupational and physical therapists. As for the activities, they seem well suited for the majority of the residents. Also, the activities director has set up bus trips where the residents can just go out for a ride and enjoy the nice scenery. It’s in a great location and there’s pretty farm land and fields to look at.”

Criteria for the award winners included an average overall rating of at least 4.5 stars and a minimum number of reviews. Certificates and web badges were presented to winners of the SeniorAdvisor.com Best of 2015 Award. New Physical Therapy Program and Advanced Exercise Equipment keep Arbour Square Campus Residents and Community Members Healthy

The staff and caregivers are always bringing new ideas to the community to keep the residents happy, healthy and comfortable in their environment. One of the newest additions to the campus is the Specialized Optimal Aftercare Recovery (SOAR) Program, provided in conjunction with Senior Physical Therapy Services. This unique program allows an individual, who lives outside of the Arbour Square community, a chance to continue their rehabilitation journey. Additionally, there is now an option of using the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®, a key component to a speedier recovery. “We have the privilege to have Senior Physical Therapy Services, LLC on our campus and be available to all our seniors and people in the community who need therapy to recover from surgeries before returning home,” said Mimi Kehan, campus executive director. “Our on-site therapist, and owner of SPTS, Steve Sherer has been very helpful to all participants in the SOAR Program.” The SOAR Program at Arbour Square offers therapy services to individuals who need continued recovery from a multitude of surgical procedures and acute illnesses. These areas include joint replacements, post-fracture injuries, spinal surgeries, recent stroke events, cataract surgeries, or ACL or meniscus repairs. It was designed to capture any procedure or circumstance that leaves you uneasy or unable to return immediately to your home. The basic concept of the SOAR Program allows extended time to recuperate before returning to a daily routine at home, and replaces the need for taxing assistance from family and friends. The program will allow access to Senior Physical Therapy Services’ on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy offered throughout the week. For qualified participants, a new state-of-the-art exercise piece of rehab equipment, the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®, will greatly enhance and expedite the road to recovery. Sherer explains, “The Anti-Gravity Treadmill was developed with NASA technology, which reduces stress, strain and impact on the body. The treadmill provides support to get people to walk comfortably; walk or jog farther, faster, and with more stability; prevent falls; and improve overall health and wellness to achieve more independence in day-to-day life.” The treadmill uses a technology that alters body weight, relieving pressure from joints and making it easier to walk or jog. The advanced air pressure-controlled chamber creates a lifting force, providing the “unweighting,” which makes walking and running easier on the joints. “There is no strain on my knees, which usually hurt with everything that I do,” said Hillside resident Charles “Hap” Arnold, 91. “I am walking up to 30 minutes a day on the AlterG. It has been over two years since I have been able to walk this far without any pain.” “The AlterG is truly an amazing piece of equipment,” said Sherer. “It enables us to reduce someone’s body weight anywhere from 99 percent all the way down to 20 percent, depending on the patient’s condition.” Many residents at Arbour Square have taken advantage of the new treadmill and use it two or three times per week to maintain their fitness levels. It has helped residents keep their balance when walking and give them more confidence in their daily routines. “I can't believe how much I really like the machine,” expressed Dorothy Olock, 88, Arbour Square resident. “I was skeptical at first but this is really incredible. I am walking longer than I have in quite a while and I’m not out of breath doing it.” Those recovering from an injury that use the anti-gravity treadmill can start walking sooner than they would be able to with a normal treadmill, and this helps improve their overall recovery time. The treadmill has been proven effective with fall prevention, osteoporosis, strength, coordination, and balance. “We are so thrilled to have this new exercise equipment at Arbour Square,” said Kehan. “We’ve had it since November 2013 we’ve seen a lot of improvement from everyone that uses it. It’s the only treadmill like it in the Harleysville area and we encourage seniors to try it and feel for themselves how much it can help with their overall health and mobility.” Senior Physical Therapy Services and the AlterG are available to the residents at Arbour Square. Many of the residents who have utilized these services have had great success. This can be seen through residents walking further distances with improved confidence and safety. Most residents’ insurance plans cover the cost of therapy, as well as the use of the AlterG. Affordable private pay wellness packages are also available for a continued fitness protocol after insurance coverage is no longer available. The SOAR Program is open to all surrounding community members who need additional recovery time. The cost of $125 per day, with a seven-day minimum stay, includes room and board in a specialized adaptive apartment, which is conducive to optimal recovery. Along with insurance coverage, SOAR participants will be able to access therapy services, including the use of the AlterG.
